Finding your study note file
The name of the file for your Personal Notes is called Default.j4l. This file is normally found in the RefWorks folder for Biblesoft's Program Files. To get to the file
- Click on Start. Note for win 8/8.1 Users: Press and hold the Windows key and tap the E key on your keyboard to bring up the File Explorer window.
- Click on Computer, Windows 8 or This PC. If you see This PC appear a second time, then try clicking on that second This PC.
- Click on the C Drive, this may also say OS.
- Double Click on Program Files or Program Files (x86) if you are running a 64 bit system
- Double Click on Biblesoft
- Double Click on PC Study Bible
- Double Click on RefWorks
- Look for a file called Deafult.j4l Important Note - If this file is dated for 2008, then this indicates that you are looking at the wrong file for your Personal Notes.
To find the right Default.j4l file
Apparently, newer operating systems for Windows a tendency to save Personal Notes to a RefWorks folder in a completely different place then the Biblesoft Program Files folder.
- Click on the Start Menu. Note for Win 8/8.1 users â DO NOT go into the Start menu to search for this file. Instead, go to the File Explorer window that can be access by pressing and holding the Windows key and then tap the E key on your keyboard.
- In the space that says Search programs and files type in Default.j4l making sure not to hit on the Enter key. Note for Win 8/8.1 users â First, make sure you are in the C: drive and then type Default.j4l into the Search field in the upper right corner.
- Instead, click where it says See more results.
- A window will appear, more than likely with the j4l file you have been accessing showing up at the top because you have been accessing a specific place for the file. This file is not the one you are looking for.
- Look for something that says Search again in and click on Computer which will be under that.
- This will start a new Search for Default.j4l, but be careful to not click on anything that comes up with a magnifying glass next to the file name; this indicates that it is a Search. Also, make sure that you don't click on the file that has Recent in the path; that indicates a file you have already been accessing.
- The file you are looking for has a path that starts out like: C:\Users\(computers name)\AppData\
- You will want to open any file that starts up this way in its own window. I have seen paths that start out this way, but end in the Recent folder. Because you will more than likely only see the beginning of the path, I recommend opening any file in its own window that has this same beginning.
- You can right click and select Open File Location at the bottom of the list that appears and close any windows that does not end in RefWorks\Default.j4l
Use the instructions below to make a copy of your Personal Notes
If you make a new note at least once a week, then saving the information to a thumb\flash drive will work, but remember that thumb\flash sticks are not as reliable as a CD or DVD.
- Place the thumb\flash stick into the USB port or the CD\DVD into the disc drive
- In the Auto play window that comes up, select Open Folder to view files in you use a stick or Burn files to disc if you use a disc Note â If you use a disc, then you will be asked âHow do you want to use this disc?â; use whatever method that is selected first and click on Next
- A folder will come up as a window
- Click on Start Note for win 8/8.1 Users â Press and hold the Windows key and tap the E key on your keyboard to bring up the File Explorer window.
- Click on Computer, Windows 8 or This PC. If you see This PC appear a second time, then try clicking on that second This PC.
- Click on the C Drive, this may also say OS
- Double Click on Program Files or Program Files (x86) if you are running a 64 bit system
- Double Click on Biblesoft
- Double Click on PC Study Bible
- Double Click on RefWorks
- Look for a file called Deafult.j4l
- Right click on the file
- Click on Send to and a list will appear
- You want to send this file to the empty CD\DVD, depending on what the drive is called will determine what option you need to click on. Commonly, a disc or thumb stick will be the last item in the last.
- Go to the first window that came up and see if the file Default.j4l is in there Note: Continue to step 16 if you are burning a disc
- Once the file is in the window for the CD\DVD, right click in an open space in the window
- Click on Burn to disc
- Click on Next making sure not to change anything
- Once the file has finished, you will see a message saying âYou have successfully burned your files to the discs!
- Click on Finish to close this window
To copy over the file for My Personal Notes: (from a backup)
- Insert the disc or flash drive with the backup into the appropriate drive or USB port
- Open the folder with the backup files. Note: Depending on how you have your computer set up, this selection may come up automatically. If it doesn't, then go to Computer (My Computer for XP), then click on the drive with the backup.
- Open the RefWorks folder. If you have made a copy of the Biblesoft folder, then open that folder, open PC Study Bible folder and then open the RefWorks folder
- Look for the file called Default.j4l
- Right click the file
- Select Copy
- In the left hand panel, click on the C drive; this may have OS before it. Note â XP users will need to get back to My Computer by clicking on the address bar towards the top of the window, then click on My Computer and then click on C: Drive
- Look for a folder called Program Files, if you are running a 64bit system, then it will be called Program Files x86 and double click on the folder to open it
- Double click on the folder Biblesoft
- Double click on the folder PC Study Bible, this may have a number after it and that is normal
- Double click on the folder RefWorks
- In an open area of this window, right click to make a list appear
- Click on Paste
- Scroll down to the bottom to make sure the Default.j4l has appeared and close the window if it does
- If the file doesn't appear, then repeat these steps until it does
- Open PC Study Bible and look for a note you have made in the past to make sure it appears
To get rid of the paperclip icon:
- Open PC Study Bible if not open already.
- Click on Options.
- Click on Preferences.
- Scroll down until you see something called Reference works.
- In the list of titles, scroll through until you come to My Personal Notes and click to select this title.
- Once the titles is highlighted, look for something called Show icon in Bible Pane and click the box next to it to remove the check mark.
- Click on Save.
- Once the changes have taken place, you will need to close any tab with a Bible open and reopen them to make sure the icons don't show up. If you shut down your program and then reopen it, you can double click on the Return to where you last exited to see if the icons are removed.
To show the paperclip icon:
- Open PC Study Bible if not open already.
- Click on Options.
- Click on Preferences.
- Scroll down until you see something called Reference works.
- In the list of titles, scroll through until you come to My Personal Notes and click to select this title.
- Once the titles is highlighted, look for something called Show icon in Bible Pane and click the box next to it to put the check mark.
- Click on Save.
- Once the changes have taken place, you will need to close any tab with a Bible open and reopen them to make sure the icons shows up.
Editing Personal Notes in the Area provided in the Bottom Window
- Make sure you are in a Verse that has a note you have made already. Left clicking your cursor once in the verse will make sure your program is focused in the right area which is the Bible Translation Window in the verse you have a note in already.
- Left click once in the Commentary window at the bottom.
- See if My Personal Notes is NOT grayed out. If it is, then go back over the first two steps until you can click on My Personal Notes.
- Left click on My Personal Notes and see if it appears.
- If it comes up, then you should be free to make a new note on the verse you wanted to make a note on.
If you get a message saying, "There is a different version of My Personal Notes installed", then follow the steps below to make a new note
- Click on the Commentary icon at the top of the screen.
- Click on My Personal Notes.
- Select a verse you will not be going to for awhile.
- Enter in a set of words or phrases, nothing specific.
- Click on the Save changes and exit mode icon at the bottom.
